Project Description / Scope A fast-track, expedited project that required close coordination with HCAI and local building department due to the requirement to move patients in by a fixed date that could not be extended. Success of this project was the result of a team effort to upgrade an existing facility to meet the needs of the behavioral health hospital with no flexibility in the completion date. We worked closely with HCAI leadership and field staff to communicate the urgency of the project and implement strategies such as managed review and field reviews to keep the project moving. Ultimately, separating some of the building upgrades into a separate project, allowing that scope to proceed without delaying the opening of the behavioral health hospital department. This collaborative approach enabled the team to meet the target deadline and move patients into the facility before the required date.

Planning and Design Approach Project successfully provided a safe and home-like environment with all required spaces. The courtyard later received a donation that funded upgrades, including a shaded relaxation area, a new basketball court, and enhanced landscaping to improve the patient experience.

Innovation Points The courtyard had two sections that allowed the building to be converted. The first section provided a patient activity area and a space for relaxation. The second section extended the outdoor area to serve as a refuge area, allowing the department to lock the doors while still providing adequate egress. This also made it easier for staff to control entry to and exit from the department.

Additional Information County of San Diego was utilizing Alvarado Hospital, which was no longer suitable for the care of the CAPS department. Rady Children's Hospital agreed to accommodate the children before the building was demolished. Through strong teamwork among Rady Children's Hospital, the design team, HCAI, and the builder, the project was successfully completed on budget and on schedule.
